Our winter quarter came to an end this past Saturday and brought with it a week-long break from studies. Whenever break time arrives, I’m always excited to head home and spend time with family and friends. Some colleagues of mine traveled to Honduras for a Fellowship of Christian Optometrists mission trip, while others went down to Florida for some fun in the sun.Read More
Last weekend was the last exam-free weekend of the quarter, and of course, it was also Super Bowl weekend. On Sunday, several of RC residents came together to watch the big game in the second floor lounge. Game day snacks were abundant and good cheer was universal as the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens faced off. I took a break from studies to join my colleagues and enjoy the excitement. I watched the second half, after that unprecedented 34-minute blackout, as the 49ers tried to close the gap the Ravens had established. The Niners fell short in the end, but between the plays, we all were amused by the over-the-top, $4-million-per-30-seconds-of-air-time commercials. One of my favorites was the Taco Bell ‘Viva Young’ ad, featuring a group of older friends having the time of their lives.Read More
I attended my first Chicago Bulls game this weekend with a group of friends and colleagues from ICO. Though I’ve lived in Chicago and cheered on the Bulls for years, it wasn’t until Saturday that I actually saw them live at the United Center. The possibility of attending the game came as a perk of living in the ICO’s Residential Complex. Students frequently have the opportunity through the RC to attend fun events together like this Bulls game, Broadway in Chicago theater events like Les Misérables, and comedy shows at the Second City.
About fifty of us received tickets to the game and ventured to the United Center on the CTA Green Line. When we entered the stadium, we trekked all the way up to our seats in section 325. We took our seats and sat down to enjoy a gripping showdown against the Memphis Grizzlies.Read More
Returning to campus on last week was nothing short of difficult. It was a challenge to say goodbye to all the amusements and celebrations of break, the long days spent getting some much needed R and R, and the late nights doing everything but studying. Walking back into the RC was made brighter by seeing the faces of colleagues and roommates with a similar disposition and an equal lack of productivity over break. And a bowl of Hershey’s kisses and hugs at the front desk that embraced us with sweetness.Read More
It’s break time again at ICO and I’m so glad to be home with my family. Break started after an exam on Friday in one of our harder courses–ocular anatomy–and once it was over it was so good to finally be able to breathe again. Minutes after we completd the exam, taxi cars were pulling up by the Residential Complex to take home several of my colleagues and friends. I headed home after a celebratory lunch and shopping trip with friends. We tried a restaurant called Opart Thai that had a cool vibe, yummy food, and a location near campus. Our shopping trip took us to Michigan Avenue where we conquered the holiday sales and deals.Read More
